Ken Stephenson

Ken Stephenson
His death was unexpected, but Dad (Ken Stephenson) unfortunately never recovered from Mums death in December 2018 and, after falling ill at the start of last month he spent a few days in Lincoln County Hospital, and unfortunately he died of pneumonia on the 5th April.
I appreciate that Dad was well known in both sports (Roller Hockey and Hockey) and some of you would have wanted to have paid your last respects, but this being so soon after Mums death we decided on a family only funeral which occurred last week.
Sorry to pass on this sad news but at 88 years of age the old slap stick played a great game from the bully off right up the the final whistle.
For more infomration on Ken's sporting history see [Read the rest...] below
Kind regards, Nigel Stephenson

Dad was a little guy with a big heart and Hockey was his life, from his mid-Teens right up to last year when he retired from sport at 88 years of age:

ROLLER HOCKEY
* Dad started playing Roller Hockey at the age of 16-years old
* Captain of Wakefield Rovers Roller Hockey Team 1952 (aged 22)
* Club Secretary and Treasurer 1958
* Captain of Yorkshire County Roller Hockey for 13 years
* Represented England in Mozambique, Belgium, Holland in the early 60's
* Gained international (Great Britain) honours in 1964
* Later played for Spen Valley Flyers Roller Hockey club
* Officiated at the European Championships at Herne Bay 1979

FIELD HOCKEY
* Retired from roller hockey and switched to field hockey playing for Wakefield and Slazengers.
* When Dad stopped playing hockey he continued his close relationship with the sport as an umpire and was awarded a Certificate of Merit for service and dedication to sport
* President of Yorkshire County Hockey Umpires Association 1989-90
* Appointment Selector Northern Counties Hockey Umpires Association from 1994
* With his continued work with hockey the sport named an award after him - He was presented with the Inaugural Ken Stephenson Salva in recognition of his outstanding service for North Hockey and Umpiring in 2013
* Yorkshire County Hockey Umpire's appointment secretary
* English Hockey Level 2 Umpire Assessor representative
* Tournament Director at Cockermouth 2002
* English Hockey certificate of achievement for outstanding contribution to the year of the umpire 2005
* Awarded certificate representing outstanding contribution to umpires and umpiring in the umpiring administration category 2006
* Honorary life member of North Hockey Association 2007
* Life member for Yorkshire Hockey Association 2010
* Trophy for services to North Hockey Umpire Association named after Dad given to the person who has given most to hockey 2013
* Retired from the sport in late 2018

In memory of an unsung Yorkshire sporting great.

middleton02.jpgBarry Middleton retires from international hockey

On behalf of everyone at Yorkshire Hockey Association and the Yorkshire hockey family in general, we would all like to pass on our congratulations to Barry on a wonderful international career.

Barry has been an inspiration and role model to so many and has been a true legend of our sport, at the same time putting the county of Yorkshire and his home club of Doncaster HC on the world hockey map.

We all wish him well in international retirement and thank him for all the memories.

BRADFORD HOCKEY CLUB - 125th Anniversary Dinner
bradford_black_.jpg125th Anniversary Dinner
BRADFORD HOCKEY CLUB IS 125 YEAR OLD IN 2019, and in honour of this occasion, our Senior Awards Dinner will also take the form of a celebration of this achievement.
This event will be held at the Cedar Court Hotel, Rooley Lane, Bradford on Saturday 11 May 2019 from 7.00 pm.  We would like to extend a warm invitation to anyone who shares a part of their history in hockey with Bradford Hockey Club.  During the day, we will also be hosting charity matches between current and former players and again we would love to see some old (or not so old) faces returning to the club to mark this occasion.
There will be a barbecue and refreshments at the matches during the day for which donations to charity will be welcome, and tickets for the dinner, including a three course meal, are £28.00.
We hope you will be able to join us.
If you are interested in either (or both) of these events, please contact -email- and we will give you further details.
