Former Academy Player Achieves Global Success
Former Academy Player Achieves Global Success
dan_west.jpgWell Done Dan & Matt!
We are delighted to share the fantastic news that former Academy players have achieved global success over the weekend.

Dan West, from Doncaster, was part of the GB U21 squad that won the Sultan of Johor Cup in India at the weekend and scored a vital goal contributing to the success.Dan was joined in the squad by fellow Yorkshireman, Matthew Ramshaw who also plays for Loughborough Students. Matt and Dan have both been key members of their appropriate Academy Centres, Regional Performance Centres and the Pennine Pumas (North of England squad) during their early hockey careers and have played together for the EH National Age Group at varying levels.
These two, who have only recently left school, are 18/19, so their selection to the GB EDP squad is a fantastic achievement - and to win the SOJ Cup is brilliant!
Dan was a member of Doncaster Hockey Club until last season when he relocated to begin his studies at Loughborough University.

Oates Inspires U21s To Sultan Of Johor Cup Title

The Great Britain Elite Development Programme (EDP) squads for the 2018/19 season have been selected, with each of the Home Nations well represented.

Launched last season, the GB EDP is part of a strategic objective during the Tokyo 2020 cycle to accelerate the development of future medal winning Olympians.

The programme has already seen great success since its inception, with three members of last year’s Men’s GB EDP squad – Rhys Smith, Jack Waller and Zach Wallace – all making their senior international debuts in the recent Anniversary International in partnership with Toshiba TVs.

Furthermore, several players have had the opportunity to train with the senior teams over the course of the past year while both teams also took part in Six Nations tournaments this summer.

Speaking about the announcement, Heather Williams – the Head of Elite Talent Development at GB Hockey – said: “My congratulations to all the players who have been selected to the 2018/19 squads.

“It’s great to see all Home Nation’s represented in both squads, including new members who have come through their respective U18 National Age Group programmes.

“My thanks to all the coaches, clubs, friends and families, whose support is critical to helping these players balance the demands of elite level hockey and realise their potential.”

While not age categorised, the EDP has been designed for athletes aged between 19-23 who may have the potential to become Olympic medallists. A thorough and comprehensive selection process has recently taken place.

Paul Revington will once again take charge of the Women’s GB EDP while Jon Bleby will be Head Coach of the men’s team, with GB Performance Director Ed Barney looking forward to seeing how the programme will develop further over the next year.

He commented: “The evolution of GB EDP has been a significant strategic focus for us through the first two years of the cycle - I am delighted to see the manner in which it has progressed and the quality of player development that we have seen.

“It’s exciting and inspiring to see some of these players train, perform and compete on a equal footing when they spend time with the senior programme.

“Culturally, the programme has made huge steps and is much more closely aligned to the demands and expectations of delivering medal winning senior international performances.

“Huge credit must go to Heather Williams, Paul Revington and Jon Bleby for the all the work they have invested over the past year. We wish those newly selected players all the best as they strive to become medal winning Olympians of the future.”

Both teams will attend a selection of training camps and tournaments across the coming months.

Graham Seaton

Graham Seaton
Graham Seaton's funeral will take place on Friday 5th October at 1.15pm at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium, Periwood Lane, Sheffield, S8 0HP.
Graham's family invite you to join us afterwards at a Dronfield pub (info given out on the day). Please let us know if you are joining us afterwards so that we can let the pub know how many to cater for, thank you.
There will be a collection which will be shared between the MDS UK Patient Support Group and the purchase of a gift for the wonderful staff of Hasland Ward at the Royal Hospital in Chesterfield who were like a family to all of us during Graham's last weeks. However, we understand that some people may prefer to buy flowers and these will also be gratefully received.
Whatever you choose to wear is immaterial, be it the traditional black, hockey colours, bright dramatic celebratory clothing - whatever you feel is right for the celebration of Graham's life. What really counts is your presence to say a joyful goodbye to a life most valued.
Finally, we invite everyone to contribute to a book of remembrance. We would like you to share memories, photos and funny stories with us. We will have a basket to collect any contributions on the day which will be added to the book later. (Please only write on one side so that we can stick them in and make sure that you put your name on and how you know Graham!)
Please contact us if you have any queries.
Many thanks, Cia Seaton Sarah Johnson and Kathryn Ward

I am sorry to inform you that Graham Seaton, an SUBHC committee member, player and umpire for over forty years, died yesterday in The Royal Hospital, Chesterfield.
He was being treated for cancer of the bone marrow and was typically upbeat about his prognosis and treatment. He slipped and fell last Saturday and never fully regained consciousness. He died peacefully with his family there yesterday morning, Thursday September 20th. I will forward funeral arrangements when I have the details.
Graham had been unwell for some time and had faced considerable difficulties with his usual fortitude and joie de vivre, but the effects of the fall had proved too much. He will be sadly missed by all in the hockey community and beyond.
It is fitting that I reproduce below the nomination for Graham to be the EHA Club Umpire of the Year in 2015. He duly won this prestigious award and said on the evening of the presentation at the Madejski stadium that “this is beyond doubt the biggest and proudest moment of my hockey career.” I saw myself a troupe of GB internationals, elite umpires and top officials all congratulating Graham on the award and he was beaming with pride; an image that will always stay with me.

Graham Seaton, fixtures and umpire secretary at Sheffield University Bankers, has umpired for over forty years whilst still playing himself in the 70s and 80s. When injuries brought about his player retirement  he took up the whistle in earnest. He estimates that he has umpired well over 1900 games. In the several where I was playing he got decisions right, allowed the game to flow, and punished miscreants appropriately and fairly. He is well liked and highly regarded across the county, both female and male players. In all of this time he only issued one red card, a testament to his understanding, empathy and authority.
When SUBHC merged with the University of Sheffield in 1999 he began to umpire 2-3 Wednesday “uni” Games during term time, in addition to 2-3 Saturday/Sunday games during the season. In summer he regularly umpires 2-3 games per week in the local summer league. He was in the neutral schemes for Yorkshire but left as he was able only to umpire one game per week…not enough!
He has umpired me in games ranging from 1st team (North Premier League but friendlies only) to 10th team, and this is a major point…if an umpire is needed Graham will volunteer, whatever the level, and , often at short notice, travel across the county to help the club fulfil a particular fixture.
He has also served for several years on the Yorkshire HA committee, being the divisional rep for the Premier League.

For the last ten years he has also been our club’s Fixtures Secretary and consequently arranges all fixtures, venues, times and umpires…even down to the   number of teas required along with vegetarian numbers! When he was teaching he encouraged many pupils to take up hockey, and many did so, with several reaching the higher teams and representing the club at county level. One even managed to become England over 40 GK for a number of years.

Graham would be an excellent choice for this award as he has given so much to Yorkshire hockey in general and SUBHC in particular. He would be delighted and honoured to receive such recognition (not that he knows about this nomination!)
Best wishes
Ray Everitt

Inputting YHA League Results to the YHA Website
Inputting YHA League Results to the YHA Website
Every Club playing in the Yorkshire Hockey Leagues has it's own login to the YHA Website for the purpose of inputting league results.
Someone in your club will either be responsible for inputting your team's results, or, if each team does their own, will be able to let you know what the login details are.
If you are stuck in a position where no one knows the login (perhaps the person who knew has moved on elsewhere), don't panic - email me at -email- and I will reset your login details and let your club secretary know what they are.
Meanwhile, if you have no access, email your result
to -email- , stating: which league; which division; who the teams were; what the result is, making it clear who won; and not least, which team you are from, and the result will be added to the webiste for you.

Howard Spencer
Howard Spencer
It is with much sadness that we announce the death last night of Howard Spencer.
Howard played for many years for Halifax HC 1st team and was a solid full back back in the days when all hockey was 'friendly', and he was the current Halifax HC Club President.
Howard had also been heavily involved in the Yorkshire Hockey Umpires Association (and previously Yorkshire County Hockey Umpires Association), serving as Association Secretary from 1998 to 2006, and Association President from 1991-1993.
in recent years Howard would often be found on the touchline at Park Lane, watching Halifax Matches along with the late Bernard French and he too was a gentleman, so in a short space of time we have lost two great stalwarts of Halifax Hockey Club, and Yorkshire Hockey.
Our thoughts go out to Howard's family.
Howard's funeral to be held at Providence Chapel of Rest, Huddersfield Road, Elland, HX5 9AH on Friday 5th October at 1pm.

YHA League Match Start Time & Venue Information

yhalogoblue.jpgYHA League Match Start Time & Venue Information
Many thanks to all clubs who have entered start times and venues to YHA League Fixtures.
There are one or two outstanding sets of start times and venue information not yet entered and we will be contacting the clubs concerned.

NOTES:
1: Swapping Home and Away Fixtures: All you need to do is to swap the dates of the home and away fixtures (and start time and venue info if this has changed)
So if a fixture on 22 September is Team A v Team B; and the return fixture Team B v Team A is on 8 December, the dates need to be changed to: 8 December: Team A v Team B, and: 22 September: Team B v Team A. Remember: You can only change your own club's home fixture; Your opponents will need to do thier home fixture.

2: Still awaiting confirmation of start time and/or venue information for your home matches?
Add a note to any fixture stating a reason why the start time and/or venue info is not present, such as: 'Start time yet to be confirmed by venue,' or 'Venue yet to be confirmed.' This gives a head-up to anyone checking the YHA Website for match information.
Also, make sure that you Division Representative and your Opponents are aware of the reason for missing information.

3: If you have any issues regarding providing or confirming match information and don't know what to do CONTACT YOUR DIVISION REPRESENTATIVE - they need to know what is going on and may be able to help. They should be your first port of call.

Yorkshire Youth Leagues - Results for Sunday 17 September 2018

yhalogoblue.jpgYorkshire Youth Leagues - Results for Sunday 17 September 2018
Girls Under-14s and Boys Under-16s
UPDATE - All BU16 Week1 and GU14 Week 1 fixtures are on the website - we would be grateful if you would login and enter results.
If a team didn't turn up to play enter a 3-0 result in favour of your team and add [team x] did not attend the session - where 'team x' is the name of the non-attender (this applies to all Under-14 and Under-16 sessions - for Under-10 and Under-12 sessions matches where teams do not attend should be marked as POSTPONED and add the REASON: [team x] did not attend the session - where 'team x' is the name of the non-attender).
If you have problems accessing the website for any reason email myself at -email- with the reason you cannot add results (other than the fixtures not being there!), and we will make sure that you have access.
You can, if you wish, email your results to -email- we will add them for you.

Please note that the Week 1 fixtures for the above leagues were not on the website ready for results input after Sunday's Week 1 round of matches.
We can only apologise for our error in not having the website ready for you to input results.
All three Leagues will be added to the website this afternoon (Tuesday 18 September) and we would be garteful if all teams would add their results.
We will update club results input accounts with these three leagues once they have been added to the webiste later today.
Once again my apologies for the oversight.
