Richard Haigh
wakfield.gifWAKEFIELD HOCKEY CLUB NEWS RELEASE

Wakefield Hockey Club is sad to report the death of a key former member Richard Haigh.

Richard joined Wakefield HC in the 1970s playing in goal for the 1st and 2nd teams.

He soon became Social Chairman and introduced fund raising events such as “Indoor Olympic Games night” where players threw straws for javelins and the ladies sat on the gentlemen’s knees while drinking beer from baby bottles. The Men’s Miss World competition also proved highly successful with the blondes normally coming out on top.

Richard acted as Wakefield Men’s Hockey Club secretary for almost 20 years before he moved up to act as President 1992- 95 and 1997-98

Richard was extremely well organised and very efficient. We knew that if he took responsibility for a task it would be completed to perfection. Often he had done jobs before the committee asked for them to be looked at! Richard was made an Honorary Life Member of Wakefield Hockey Club for all his hard work and optimistic approach.

Richard also served as President of Yorkshire Hockey 2000-2004 having been YHA Secretary for 12-13 years before this. He introduced the YHA end of season mixed Presentation Dinner and must have collected in and given out hundreds of trophies over the many years that he organised this event.

In 1985-6, Richard acted as the Yorkshire Action Man ensuring that many Yorkshire fans took a full role in planning for the 1986 World Cup in London. Phil Appleyard, the then President of English Hockey, knew very well what skills Richard could offer and he delivered with style on behalf of the county.

Always cheerful, with a happy positive approach to life, Richard will be sadly missed by all his old friends at Wakefield Hockey Club.

Following a private cremation, there will be a service of joyful thanksgiving for Richard’s life at Wakefield Cathedral at 3pm on Tuesday 23rd September.

Donations, if desired, to Wakefield Hospice and Wakefield Cathedral.
