Huge, huge CONGRATULATIONS from the whole of Yorkshire Hockey to the GB Women on their stunning Gold Medal victory over The Netherlands in the Women's Olympic Final yesterday.
For The Netherlands, the world's No. 1 ranked team, the only team they feared meeting in the final was GB, and, as it proved, with good reason!
This was the second time that the teams had contested a major final in the past year or so and the second that GB/England has won. Back in 2015 England won Eurohockey Championship Gold beating The Netherlands in a penalty shoot-out after coming back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in the last few minutes of the game.
The scale of GB/England Women's hockey achievements in the past decade may not be known to everyone but a good way to see what they have achieved is to look at the medal record for Captain Kate Richardson-Walsh who has won no less than 12 medals at Commonwealth, European and World level during that time, a fantastic achievement. She also won a further four medals won from 1999-2005.
After the match Kate announced her retirement from international hockey. Click here to see England Hockey's tribute to one of hockey's outstanding superstars.
