Eric Duke
To all associated with Yorkshire Hockey and beyond, it is with great sadness that Rotherham Hockey Club announce the passing of our President; Eric Duke. Eric passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, in the early hours of Friday morning on the 17th February, 2017. I am sure a great number of hockey colleagues will have known Eric and I am equally certain that you would like us to convey your deepest sympathies to his family.

On behalf of everyone connected with Rotherham Hockey Club, from committee, players and volunteers, I would like to offer our profound sympathies to Betty and family on their sad loss. It is hoped they can find peace, comfort and solace in the knowledge that Eric brought joy to their lives as much as he did to all of us.
Each and every one of us will have abiding memories of Eric; as a friend, a player, an umpire, a supporter and most especially as our President. He has touched and influenced so many of our lives over the years and has been an example to us all. As President of our club, Eric was a magnificent ambassador representing all that is good about hockey. Even during his illness, he could often be found on the touchline supporting and encouraging our teams; testament to how much Eric loved the club; the game and the atmosphere. Eric had a wonderful tenet in life and believed in treating all with warmth, kindness, gentleness and equality. He was a true gentleman and a gentle man, who very much loved the club and who, in return, was very much loved by the club. Legend is a word that is all too easily paraphrased these days, but Eric deserves such an accolade.
In remembrance of a dear man and our President, I am reminded to use extracts from the words of Sir Henry Newbolt:
A jumping pitch and a blinding light
But his Captain’s hand on his shoulder smote
“Play up! Play up! and play the game!”
To those of you who knew Eric, you will be aware that his favourite drink was a glass of red wine. It would be nice to remember Eric by providing him with one of the best complements we could ever give; raising a glass of red wine in his memory.

James Swinscoe. Chairman. Rotherham Hockey Club
