YHA tribute to Richard Haigh
yha_logo14bw.jpgYHA Tribute to Richard Haigh

Richard served as President of Yorkshire Hockey 2000-2004 having been YHA Secretary for 12-13 years before this.  He was involved in the initial discussions that took place to merge the men’s, women’s and mixed Yorkshire hockey Leagues. Any difficult decisions were often clarified by his hockey knowledge and experience together with laughter and red wine. When it came time to appoint our first president Richard was the obvious and unanimous choice.

Following the men’s tradition of an end of season Presentation dinner Richard planned, prepared and managed the first YHA event superbly well. Past officials attended and there was much reminiscing and lots more laughter – though one or two people preferred to sit in a separate room part of the time!

To have a presentation you have to have the trophies and here again Richard proved a master. He has collected in and given out hundreds of trophies over the many years that he organised this event. When deciding who went where to collect a trophy Richard was always first to volunteer for some places, (“auntie Chris will like a day in Scarborough, Harrogate or York”) and the rest of us had to make do with Scunthorpe and Grimsby. For a couple of weeks before the dinner their home was perfumed with the aroma of silver polish,  the dining room table was covered in cups, scrolls, salvers and replicas and his wardrobe was the repository of many YHA trophies. Chris found three in there just last week.

A man who loved life, worked hard at every thing he took on, generous in spirit and friendship, a great sense of humour, well respected; Richard will be sadly missed by very many from Yorkshire Hockey Association.

Following a private cremation, there will be a service of joyful thanksgiving for Richard’s life at Wakefield Cathedral at 3pm on Tuesday 23rd September.

Donations, if desired, to Wakefield Hospice and Wakefield Cathedral.
