Surbiton crowned double champions as England Hockey reconciles 2019/20 season Following the suspension of domestic hockey (National League) in March and the decision that no domestic hockey would be played before 30 June, this morning the England Hockey Board met and is now in a position to confirm how the 2019-20 England Hockey League season will be concluded. This varies from the standard League regulations. England Hockey has fully considered other sports’ decisions at this time, as well as other possible options open to us before coming to these solutions. Compared to other possible alternatives these are judged to negatively and positively impact a smaller number of teams. Following a full analysis of all possible options and a period of discussion, the key points are summarised below: i. League Finals – As the league semi-finals and final were unplayed the Champions of the League and qualification for European competition will be determined by the standings at the end of the regular season. This means that Surbiton are both men’s and women’s league champions. ii. Promotion & Relegation – Teams’ standings when the league stopped will be their final standings. Existing promotion and relegation regulations will be applied based on these standings (subject to iii below), including promotion from Regional Leagues. iii. League Play-Offs – It is judged that there is no fair method to resolve the league play-offs in line with regulations. Under normal circumstances, the play-offs would see the two Division One North & South winners and Premier Division ninth-placed team play off for two Premier Division places. For 2020-21 season only the Premier Division will run with eleven teams, all of these three teams will play in the Premier Division. This also means that one team is reprieved relegation at both Division One and Conference levels. Existing relegation regulations at these levels have been extended to determine which teams are reprieved. These are, based on teams’ playing records in parallel divisions, where the ninth-placed team with the highest number of points retain its position and the other ninth-placed team(s) relegated. England Hockey took this decision guided by the following principles. These were in priority order: 1) To retain the integrity of the competition and use existing regulations relating to promotion and relegation where possible - the outcome to be as close as possible to likely outcome for teams had the season concluded and therefore to be seen as fair. 2) A consistency of decisions for teams at different levels within the league. 3) Teams not to be disadvantaged by games that were not played. There is of course no perfect solution to resolve an unprecedented issue such as this, but the decisions best complement these principles and affect the fewest teams. This is also available through the main website. Domestic hockey activity suspension extended until June 30 England Hockey has today taken the decision to suspend all hockey activity until June 30. Currently hockey activity is suspended until April 15 but, with the continuing social restrictions caused by Covid-19, this extension is pragmatic in the circumstances and provides clarity for our clubs, players, officials and volunteers. We have asked that this national position is replicated at a local level by counties, leagues and independent hockey providers. It is hugely disappointing to curtail hockey activity in this way and there will be many league and cup competitions which will not now reach their natural conclusion. The implications of the decision affect different areas of England Hockey activity in different ways, details of which can be found below. We are continuing to offer support to our clubs in this difficult period and our local Relationship Managers are available as normal to support in any way they can. A list of our Relationship Managers and their contact details can be found here. We are also in contact with Sport England to best access the support they are putting in place for clubs, and will communicate more in the coming days. Finally, the health and wellbeing of those in the hockey community is our overriding concern so please follow the government guidance and stay safe. Please search #StayInWorkOut on social media for tips on how to stay active indoors. Yorkshire HA & North HA Information to follow.

06.03.2020 www.englandhockey.co.uk Applications have now opened to volunteer and become a member of the Ball Patrol team at the FIH Pro League Matches and other England Hockey events in 2020. We are looking for young people aged between 15 to 18 to be in our Ball Patrol team for all the Great Britain home matches from 2 May to 14 June. Ball Patrollers must be fit, have a good knowledge of hockey and the rules, be able to follow play, understand umpire decisions and have good concentration levels during matches. In addition, there are other match protocol requirements that require the services of the Ball Patrol Team and therefore there may be some match days where a team members role will solely be delivering these You can apply as an individual or as a group from a club, school or other organisation. A group can be from four to eight participants. Applications close on 21 March 2020 A briefing pack and presentation will be supplied to support all interested applicants to prepare for their training and assessment and it will outline the role and skills required to be a Ball Patroller. Shortlisted groups and individuals will be invited to attend training and assessment at England Hockey events in 2020, including the matches/tournaments identified in the Ball Patrol registration pack. Ball Patrollers will need to be available for a minimum four of the eight match days. However it helps if you can give as much availability as possible across the event days. Due to the time period of the league and its proximity in relation to crucial exam time, the Ball Patrol squad will be larger than has traditionally been appointed at tournaments. Therefore there is some flexibility around appointments for each match day and this will be done in a timely fashion.
